I refuse to believe that anyone does or ever did think he *wasn’t* in them. They just don’t care that he is.
“It’s a hoax” is an easier argument to make than trying to defend his actions, so they say that, but “infamous womanizer millionaire with a documented history of gross Howard Stern appearances, teen beauty pageants, decades-long friendship with Epstein, and a series of scandals involving porn stars, sexual assault allegations, and creep-ass comments about his own daughter” is so overwhelming. This man is more The Type than anyone living.
MAGA people who insist he’s innocent despite this have to be saying it in bad faith. The alternative feels impossible. Which would also explain why, when presented with the hypothetical, “they’d still support him.” Because they already do, they just think it’s fine he’s a child rapist. His racism, chauvinism, nationalism, and misogyny are more important to them than any collateral damage incurred through decades of being a sex criminal.
